Numbers to 1,000: Hundreds, Tens & Ones

Learn how three-digit numbers are built from hundreds, tens, and ones. Students use place-value charts and base-ten models to understand what each digit means.

This lesson also shows why 10 tens make 1 hundred, how zero can hold a place, how whole-hundreds numbers work, and why 10 hundreds make 1,000.

๐ŸŽฏ What You Will Learn

Identify hundreds, tens, and ones
Tell what each digit represents in a three-digit number.
Build a hundred from tens
Understand that 10 tens make one hundred.
Read base-ten models
Connect hundreds flats, tens rods, and ones cubes to numerals.
Understand zeros and whole hundreds
Explain what a zero means in a place and how numbers such as 400 or 700 are built.
For parents & teachers — standards alignment: This lesson directly develops CCSS 2.NBT.A.1: understanding that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones. It also emphasizes the special cases that 10 tens make 1 hundred and that 100, 200, 300, and the other whole hundreds represent groups of hundreds with 0 tens and 0 ones. The lesson's 10 hundreds = 1,000 connection is included as a short bridge to the next place-value unit and to counting within 1,000. Texas Grade 2 TEKS 2.2(A) extends related composition and decomposition work to numbers up to 1,200; MathLattice keeps that broader state range for the later Grade 2 extension lesson.

๐Ÿง  Key Vocabulary

digit — one symbol from 0 to 9 used to write numbers.
place value — the value a digit has because of its position in a number.
ones — single units.
tens — groups of 10 ones.
hundreds — groups of 10 tens, or 100 ones.
base-ten blocks — models that show ones, tens, and hundreds with blocks of different sizes.

๐Ÿ”Ÿ How the Base-Ten System Grows

Our number system is organized in groups of ten. Ten ones can be bundled into one ten. Ten tens can be bundled into one hundred. Ten hundreds make one thousand.

Big idea: a digit does not have the same value everywhere. In 444, the first 4 means 400, the second 4 means 40, and the last 4 means 4.

๐Ÿงฑ Base-Ten Blocks Show Place Value

A hundreds flat represents 100 ones. A tens rod represents 10 ones. A small cube represents 1 one. We can combine these models to show any three-digit number from 100 through 999.

๐Ÿ“Š Read a Three-Digit Number by Place

In a three-digit number, the places are read from left to right: hundreds, tens, ones.

Hundreds Tens Ones
3 4 7

The number 347 has 3 hundreds, 4 tens, and 7 ones. The digits are 3, 4, and 7, but their values are 300, 40, and 7.

Common mistake: do not confuse a digit with its value. In 582, the digit 8 is a single digit, but because it is in the tens place, its value is 80.

0️⃣ Zero Can Hold a Place

Zero tells us that there are no units of that place value in the number's standard hundreds-tens-ones representation. It keeps the other digits in the correct positions.

406 4 hundreds
0 tens
6 ones
530 5 hundreds
3 tens
0 ones
700 7 hundreds
0 tens
0 ones
Read the zero carefully: 406 does not mean 46. The zero holds the tens place, so the number has 4 hundreds, no tens, and 6 ones.

๐Ÿ’ฏ Whole Hundreds

Whole-hundreds numbers contain hundreds with no extra tens or ones. The numbers below mean 1 hundred through 9 hundreds.

For example, 600 means 6 hundreds, 0 tens, and 0 ones. This is why both zeros are important.

๐ŸŒŸ What Happens at 1,000?

A three-digit number can have at most 9 hundreds. When we collect 10 hundreds, we reach 1,000. One thousand is the next place-value unit and the endpoint of this lesson's number range.

Remember: 10 ones = 1 ten, 10 tens = 1 hundred, and 10 hundreds = 1 thousand. The same base-ten pattern keeps repeating.

๐ŸŒŸ 25 Worked Examples

Try each problem first. Then open “Show solution” to check the place-value reasoning.
1 Find the hundreds digit
In 352, which digit is in the hundreds place?
Show solution Hide solution

The hundreds place is the first place from the left in a three-digit number. In 352, the digit is 3, so the number has 3 hundreds.

2 Find the tens digit
In 478, which digit is in the tens place?
Show solution Hide solution

The tens place is between the hundreds and ones places. In 478, the tens digit is 7, so the number has 7 tens.

3 Find the ones digit
In 619, which digit is in the ones place?
Show solution Hide solution

The ones place is the last place on the right. In 619, the ones digit is 9.

4 Find the value of a digit
What is the value of the digit 7 in 742?
Show solution Hide solution

The 7 is in the hundreds place. Seven hundreds is 700.

5 Tens have a different value
What is the value of the digit 4 in 348?
Show solution Hide solution

The 4 is in the tens place. Four tens is 40, so the value of the digit 4 is 40.

6 Ones keep their single-unit value
What is the value of the digit 9 in 529?
Show solution Hide solution

The 9 is in the ones place, so its value is 9.

7 Read a base-ten model
A model has 2 hundreds, 4 tens, and 6 ones. What number does it represent?
Show solution Hide solution

Two hundreds make 200, four tens make 40, and six ones make 6. Together the model represents 246.

8 A zero in the tens place
A model has 5 hundreds, 0 tens, and 3 ones. What number does it represent?
Show solution Hide solution

Five hundreds make 500. There are no tens, and there are 3 ones. The number is 503. The 0 holds the tens place.

9 A zero in the ones place
A model has 7 hundreds, 8 tens, and 0 ones. What number does it represent?
Show solution Hide solution

Seven hundreds make 700 and eight tens make 80. With 0 ones, the number is 780.

10 A whole-hundreds number
A model has 9 hundreds, 0 tens, and 0 ones. What number does it represent?
Show solution Hide solution

Nine hundreds is 900. Whole-hundreds numbers have 0 tens and 0 ones.

11 Name the place-value units
How many hundreds, tens, and ones are in 321?
Show solution Hide solution

The digits tell the place-value units directly: 3 hundreds, 2 tens, and 1 one.

12 Read a number with a zero
How many hundreds, tens, and ones are in 608?
Show solution Hide solution

608 has 6 hundreds, 0 tens, and 8 ones. The zero tells us there are no tens.

13 Find a missing number of tens
A number has 4 hundreds, 7 tens, and 2 ones. What is the number?

Place the digits in hundreds-tens-ones order: 8, 3, 5. The number is 835.

15 Bundle ten tens
How many tens make 1 hundred?
Show solution Hide solution

A hundred is a bundle of 10 tens. Since 10 × 10 = 100, ten tens make 100.

16 Count hundreds
How many hundreds are in 300?
Show solution Hide solution

300 means 3 hundreds, with 0 tens and 0 ones.

17 Turn hundreds into a numeral
What number is 6 hundreds?
Show solution Hide solution

Six groups of one hundred make 600.

18 Hundreds, tens, and ones together
What number is 4 hundreds, 8 tens, and 5 ones?
Show solution Hide solution

4 hundreds = 400, 8 tens = 80, and 5 ones = 5. The number is 485.

19 Choose the correct place
In 764, does the digit 6 mean 6, 60, or 600?
Show solution Hide solution

The digit 6 is in the tens place, so it means 60.

20 Understand zero as a placeholder
What does the 0 mean in 706?
Show solution Hide solution

The 0 is in the tens place. It means the number has 0 tens. The number still has 7 hundreds and 6 ones.

21 No ones in this number
How many ones are shown by the ones digit in 450?
Show solution Hide solution

The ones digit is 0, so the number has 0 ones in its standard hundreds-tens-ones representation.

22 Explain a hundred
Mia says, “100 is 10 tens.” Is she correct?
Show solution Hide solution

Yes. 10 tens = 100, so a bundle of ten tens can be called one hundred.

23 Reach 1,000
How many hundreds make 1,000?
Show solution Hide solution

Ten hundreds make one thousand: 10 hundreds = 1,000. This is the endpoint of our number range.

24 Spot the place-value mistake
Noah says, “620 is 6 hundreds, 2 ones, and 0 tens.” Is he correct?
Show solution Hide solution

No. In 620, the 2 is in the tens place. The correct description is 6 hundreds, 2 tens, and 0 ones.

25 Explain the value of a digit
In 583, why does the digit 8 have a value of 80?
