Understanding Addition Within 10

Learn what addition means by joining groups, adding more objects, and finding a total with sums no greater than 10. Use pictures, counters, ten-frames, and addition sentences to build understanding.

This first grade addition lesson uses visual addition models, simple number stories, and hands-on representations to help students understand addition within 10 before moving to more advanced addition strategies.

addition — joining quantities or adding more to find a total.
plus sign (+) — a symbol that represents addition.
sum — the total found by adding.
total — how many there are altogether.
addition sentence — a number sentence that shows quantities being added.
equals sign (=) — shows that the value on one side is the same as the value on the other side.

➕ What Does Addition Mean?

Addition helps us find how many there are altogether. We can add when two groups are put together or when more objects are added to a group.

1️⃣ Look at the first group.
2️⃣ Join or add the second group.
3️⃣ Count the total.

✏️ Read an Addition Sentence

+plus — addition
=equals — same value

The addition sentence 2 + 3 = 5 says: “Two plus three equals five.” The number 5 is the sum, or total.

For young learners: It is fine to use counters, fingers, drawings, or a ten-frame. Understanding what the numbers mean is more important than answering quickly.

Counting can help us add. If you have 5 objects and add 2 more, you can start at 5 and count two more numbers: 6, 7. So 5 + 2 = 7.

Common mistake: The plus sign does not mean “write the numbers next to each other.” For example, 2 + 3 is 5, not 23.
