Tell Time to the Hour and Half Hour

Learn to tell and write time to the hour and half hour using both analog and digital clocks. Read the hour hand, minute hand, :00 times, and :30 times with confidence.

Students connect analog clock hands with digital times and learn why the hour hand moves halfway toward the next number at a half hour.

๐ŸŽฏ What You Will Learn

Tell time to the hour
Read clocks that show times such as 3:00, 7:00, and 12:00.
Tell time to the half hour
Read clocks that show times such as 2:30, 6:30, and 11:30.
Use analog and digital clocks
Match clock hands to written digital times.
Read both clock hands correctly
Use the hour hand and minute hand together to tell the time.
For parents & teachers — standards alignment: This lesson directly addresses CCSS 1.MD.B.3: tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks. Texas Grade 1 TEKS 1.7(E) has the same core expectation: tell time to the hour and half hour using analog and digital clocks. The lesson stays within hour and half-hour times and does not introduce quarter hours, five-minute intervals, elapsed time, or time to the nearest minute.

๐Ÿง  Key Vocabulary

analog clock — a clock face that shows time with hands.
digital clock — a clock that shows time with numbers, such as 4:30.
hour hand — the shorter hand that shows the hour.
minute hand — the longer hand that shows minutes.
o'clock — an exact hour, such as 5:00.
half past — 30 minutes after an hour, such as 5:30.

๐Ÿ•’ Read Time to the Hour

At an exact hour, the minute hand points to 12. The hour hand points directly to the hour number.

3:00 — three o'clock
3:30 — half past three

๐Ÿ•ก Read Time to the Half Hour

At a half hour, the minute hand points to 6. The hour hand has moved halfway from the current hour toward the next hour. For example, at 3:30 the hour hand is halfway between 3 and 4.

Common mistake: at 3:30, the hour hand should not point exactly to 3. Half an hour has passed, so the hour hand is halfway between 3 and 4.

๐Ÿ”ข Analog and Digital Time

Minute hand at 12
Hour hand at 6
→
6:00
six o'clock
Minute hand at 6
Hour hand halfway between 6 and 7
→
6:30
half past six

✅ Four Helpful Clock Rules

:00 → minute hand at 12Exact hour.
:30 → minute hand at 6Half hour.
Short hand = hourIt shows the hour or moves toward the next hour.
Long hand = minutesUse it first to decide :00 or :30.
Fast strategy: look at the minute hand first. If it points to 12, think :00. If it points to 6, think :30. Then use the hour hand to find the hour.

๐ŸŒŸ 25 Worked Examples

Try each clock-reading problem first. Then open “Show solution” to check your reasoning.
1 Read an hour time
The minute hand points to 12. The hour hand points to 3. What time is it?
Show solution Hide solution

When the minute hand points to 12, it is exactly on the hour. The hour hand points to 3, so the time is 3:00.

2 Read another hour time
The minute hand points to 12. The hour hand points to 7. What time is it?
Show solution Hide solution

The minute hand at 12 means :00. The hour hand at 7 means the time is 7:00.

3 Write an hour time digitally
An analog clock shows 9 o'clock. Write the time on a digital clock.
Show solution Hide solution

Nine o'clock is written 9:00.

4 Match an hour time
Which digital time matches a clock with the hour hand at 5 and the minute hand at 12: 5:00 or 5:30?
Show solution Hide solution

The minute hand at 12 means an exact hour, so the correct time is 5:00.

5 Understand the minute hand at the hour
At 11:00, where does the minute hand point?
Show solution Hide solution

At every exact hour, the minute hand points to 12.

6 Read a half-hour time
The minute hand points to 6. The hour hand is halfway between 2 and 3. What time is it?
Show solution Hide solution

The minute hand at 6 means 30 minutes past the hour. The hour hand halfway from 2 toward 3 means 2:30.

7 Read another half hour
The minute hand points to 6. The hour hand is halfway between 8 and 9. What time is it?
Show solution Hide solution

The minute hand at 6 means :30. The hour hand is past 8 but not yet at 9, so the time is 8:30.

8 Write a half-hour time digitally
A clock shows half past 4. Write the digital time.
Show solution Hide solution

Half past 4 means 30 minutes after 4 o'clock. The digital time is 4:30.

9 Match a half-hour time
Which time matches a clock with the minute hand at 6 and the hour hand halfway between 10 and 11: 10:00 or 10:30?
Show solution Hide solution

The minute hand at 6 means :30, so the time is 10:30.

10 Locate the hour hand at half past
At 6:30, should the hour hand point exactly to 6 or be halfway between 6 and 7?
Show solution Hide solution

At 6:30, half an hour has passed since 6:00, so the hour hand should be halfway between 6 and 7.

11 Use the words o'clock
A digital clock shows 1:00. Say the time using words.
Show solution Hide solution

The time is one o'clock.

12 Use the words half past
A digital clock shows 1:30. Say the time using words.
Show solution Hide solution

The time is half past one.

13 Identify the hour hand
One clock hand is short and one is long. Which hand usually shows the hour?
Show solution Hide solution

The shorter hand usually shows the hour.

14 Identify the minute hand
Which hand usually points to 12 at an exact hour and to 6 at a half hour?
Show solution Hide solution

The longer minute hand does.

15 Compare 4:00 and 4:30
How is the minute hand different at 4:00 and 4:30?
Show solution Hide solution

At 4:00 the minute hand points to 12. At 4:30 it points to 6.

16 Compare the hour hand
Where is the hour hand at 4:00, and where is it at 4:30?
Show solution Hide solution

At 4:00 it points to 4. At 4:30 it is halfway between 4 and 5.

17 Read 12:00
The minute hand points to 12 and the hour hand points to 12. What time is it?
Show solution Hide solution

Both hands are at 12, so the time is 12:00.

18 Read 12:30
The minute hand points to 6 and the hour hand is halfway between 12 and 1. What time is it?
Show solution Hide solution

The minute hand shows 30 minutes, and the hour hand has moved halfway from 12 toward 1. The time is 12:30.

19 Choose the correct analog description
Which description matches 7:30: (A) minute hand at 12 and hour hand at 7, or (B) minute hand at 6 and hour hand halfway between 7 and 8?
Show solution Hide solution

Choice B matches 7:30.

20 Choose the correct digital time
A clock shows half past 9. Which is correct: 9:00, 9:30, or 10:00?
Show solution Hide solution

Half past 9 is 9:30.

21 Correct a clock-reading mistake
A student says a clock is 3:30 because the minute hand points to 6, but the hour hand is halfway between 4 and 5. Is the student correct?
Show solution Hide solution

No. The hour hand shows which hour has just passed. Halfway between 4 and 5 means the time is 4:30.

22 Correct another mistake
A student sees the minute hand at 12 and the hour hand at 8 and says 8:30. What is the correct time?
Show solution Hide solution

The minute hand at 12 means :00, so the correct time is 8:00.

23 Match analog and digital clues
The minute hand is at 6, and the hour hand is halfway from 11 toward 12. Write the digital time.
Show solution Hide solution

The time is 11:30.
