3D Shapes & Solid Figures

Learn to identify and describe three-dimensional solids such as spheres, cones, cylinders, cubes, rectangular prisms, and triangular prisms.

Students compare flat faces and curved surfaces, notice edges and vertices, connect solids to real-world objects, and explain which attributes help identify each solid.

๐ŸŽฏ What You Will Learn

Identify common solids

Describe solid attributes
Talk about flat faces, curved surfaces, edges, and vertices.
Compare solids
Explain how two solids are alike and different.
Connect shapes to real life
Match balls, cans, boxes, and other objects to solid figures.
For parents & teachers — standards alignment: Under Common Core, students begin identifying, naming, and comparing three-dimensional shapes in Kindergarten (K.G.A.2–K.G.A.3 and K.G.B.4). In Grade 1, CCSS 1.G.A.1 continues reasoning about defining and non-defining attributes, while CCSS 1.G.A.2 uses cubes, right rectangular prisms, right circular cones, and right circular cylinders when students compose new shapes. Therefore, this lesson serves as a Grade 1 review and attribute-focused foundation for that work rather than as a separate Common Core solid-identification standard. Texas Grade 1 TEKS 1.6(B) and 1.6(E) align directly with the lesson: students distinguish defining from non-defining attributes of three-dimensional figures and identify and describe spheres, cones, cylinders, rectangular prisms (including cubes), and triangular prisms using formal geometric language.

๐Ÿง  Key Vocabulary

3D shape / solid — a shape that has length, width, and height.
face — a flat surface of a solid figure.
curved surface — a surface that bends around a solid.
edge — a boundary where surfaces meet.
vertex — a point where edges meet; more than one are called vertices.
base — a flat face used to help describe a solid; prisms and cylinders have two matching bases, while a cone has one circular base.

๐ŸงŠ Meet the 3D Solids

Sphere 1 curved surface
0 flat faces · 0 vertices
Cone 1 flat circular face
1 curved surface · 1 vertex
Cylinder 2 flat circular faces
1 curved surface
Cube 6 square faces
12 edges · 8 vertices
Rectangular Prism 6 flat faces
12 edges · 8 vertices
Triangular Prism 5 flat faces
9 edges · 6 vertices
Important: this lesson uses face for a flat surface and curved surface for a surface that bends. That keeps the language clear when comparing prisms with spheres, cones, and cylinders.

๐Ÿ” Flat Faces and Curved Surfaces

Flat faces

Flat faces can rest against a table or another flat face. Cubes and prisms are made entirely of flat faces. Cylinders and cones also have flat circular faces.

Curved surfaces

Curved surfaces bend around a solid. Spheres, cones, and cylinders have curved surfaces, which helps explain why they can roll.

✅ Four Questions to Ask About a Solid

Flat or curved?Look at the surfaces.
What shape are the faces?Square, rectangle, triangle, or circle?
Edges and vertices?Count when it helps identify the solid.
Real-world match?Think of balls, cans, boxes, and other objects.
Common mistake: a cube is not a 2D square. A square is flat, while a cube is a three-dimensional solid with 6 square faces.

23 Defining vs. non-defining attributes
A cylinder is purple. Does the color help define it as a cylinder?

Calling every box a cube
A cube is a special rectangular prism with all square faces.
Ignoring curved surfaces
Spheres, cylinders, and cones cannot be described only by flat faces.
Naming by color or orientation
Color and which way a solid is turned do not define its solid category.
What comes next: Lesson 27 focuses on Compose & Decompose Shapes, where students combine 2D and 3D shapes to make new shapes.
